The Government of India is doing experimenting with the D2M (Direct to Mobile) technology that will allows to users to download multimedia content directly in mobile phones without an internet connection.
Through this native technology, the Government of India wants to beam information directly to the citizens, counter fake news, issue emergency alerts and assist in disaster management.
According to a Deloitte study, India had 1.2 billion mobile subscribers in 2021, of which about 750 million are smartphones users.
Further, the report revealed that demand for smartphones in India is expected to increase at a CAGR of 6 percent.
By 2026, India is forecasted to have 1 billion smartphone users. The growth in smartphone users will be fueled by fifth generation (5G) technology and fast adoption in rural areas.
Hence, the Department of Technology (DoT) is conducting a feasibility study of a spectrum band for offering broadcast services directly to users’ smartphones.
Last year, public service broadcaster PRASAR Bharati also announced a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to test the feasibility of the Direct to Mobile technology.
Earlier this month, IIT Kanpur organised a conclave with support from PRASAR Bharati and TSDSI (Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India) on ‘Direct-to-Mobile & 5G Broadband – Convergence Roadmap for India’ in New Delhi.
